Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice - Refurbishment

Location: North Anston, Sheffield

The dream of Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice began in 1998, with the vision to help families in the Sheffield area who wanted an alternative to hospital care.

In 2004, local support made the dream come true and building work on the hospice began. On September 19th 2008, the doors were opened to the first families who needed help. Since then, hundreds of children, and their families, from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire have been taken care of.

Bluebell Wood support babies, children and young people whose lives are just too short, and all of our services are completely free for their families. They are there to take some of the stresses away when looking after a poorly child, and to provide all involved with the best care possible.

Be it tired mums and dads get some much needed me-time; brothers and sisters who are feeling angry, lonely or confused; Bluebell Wood has been there for families during the last moments of their child’s life.

HOW INITIAL CONTACT WAS MADE:

It was 13 years ago, back in November 2012, that Together For Cinema first installed a cinema room at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. This was the seventh cinema room in the Together For Cinema journey and was a game changer in terms of what we were able to deliver. The installer at the time, Colin Scott from ET Home Cinema, went the extra mile to deliver a stunning room that was cutting edge and easy to use. This room had served Bluebell Wood and their families well for many years, but, as is the way with technology, things had moved on and an update was needed.

Move forward to July 2024 and I was contacted by Jack Taylor of TaylorMade Smart Homes as he had agreed with Colin Scott to service his client base. Colin had moved away from the installation side of the industry and had asked Jack to take care of his clients. Later in the year Jack was contacted by Bluebell Wood as there was a problem with the original remote that needed replacing.

Jack kindly reached out to me to let me know he would be visiting the hospice and to see what else could be done. We chatted and it was agreed that Jack would get things back on track and would consider a refurbishment of the room to create some new magic, and a new experience for the children.

ROOM ASSESSMENT AND SOURCING OF PRODUCTS:

Jack and I originally met at the ISE show in February 2025, and shortly afterwards Jack visited Bluebell Wood and assessed the room. Testimony to Colin Scott and his team (and the original products installed), the room had stood the test of time and only needed a few tweaks and improvements.

The main issue had been that some of the items installed had stopped talking to each other so an upgrade to the latest Control4 ‘small room’ pack was needed, and very kindly donated. A few new cables from Webro, and a new rack from Alltrade basically brought the room back up to speed and our post install ‘obligation’ to service and maintain was satisfied… However, Jack was keen to bring a different feel to the room and he knew exactly what he wanted to do…

Since the original installation Colin Scott had set up a company called Nova Star Ceilings, manufacturing and installing, amongst other things, metre square fibre optic ceiling panels. Jack was aware of this and felt that the addition of only six of these panels would make a huge difference to the room, and the cinema experience for the children and their families.

One quick conversation with Colin and we had the promise of what was required and we were able to deliver a real transition and difference to an already wonderful room.

PRODUCT THAT WAS DONATED:

  • Alltrade (Rack): 1 x ALL-RACK Floor Standing Cabinet 18U Black (W600 x D600 x H975mm).
  • Control4 / Snap One (AV Control): 1 x Core5 Controller, 1 x SR260 Remote and 1 x T4 Series 8” Tabletop Touchscreen in Black.
  • Nova Star Ceilings (Ceiling Lighting): 6 square metres of fibre optic ‘twinkly’ light ceiling panels.
  • TaylorMade Smart Homes (Various): Installation consumables, as well as project management, design and installation time.
  • Webro (Cables): Not sure exactly what was supplied, but basically whatever we needed!

OPENING RECEPTION:

Thursday 27th November saw two of our cinema room openings and Bluebell Wood was the second of these. After the opening at the Bradford Infirmary Hospital Stuart Burgess and I headed off to North Anston to see what magic Jack Taylor had weaved at Bluebell Wood. It was a 90 minute drive and fortunately we arrived on the dot of 4pm and were greeted by Jack Taylor of TaylorMade Smart Homes and also Shane Caswell of Webro. A nice industry quartet…

For me this was a lovely return trip to an installation that we had first delivered in 2012. The room had stood the test of time, but with a few small upgrades and some ceiling Nova Star panels, the room had been given a new lease of life that the children and parents were delighted with. It’s a lesson to us all that just a few simple tweaks can really have a major impact.

Our obligation to any beneficiary of a Together For Cinema installation is to be available as and when required. If a bulb blows, we’ll replace it, if the AVR glitches we’ll replace it, if the speakers blow, we’ll replace them, basically it like any normal installation and all the installers we work with offer the back up to match, and all for no charge.

We are grateful to Jack Taylor for the work that he carried out and getting things back up, running and improved, and all just in time for Christmas. Thank you…

INSTALLER COMMENTS:

“Working with the charity Together for Cinema on the refurbishment of the cinema room at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice was a highly rewarding experience. The cinema had originally been installed over 13 years ago and was in desperate need of refurbishment after years of continuous use.

Ian and his team from Together for Cinema were a pleasure to work alongside throughout the project, bringing professionalism, expertise, and a genuine commitment to delivering a space that would make a real difference. The refurbishment focused on modernising the room, improving comfort, reliability, and accessibility while remaining sensitive to the hospice environment.

The team at Bluebell Wood were extremely supportive during the refurbishment works, ensuring our every need was met whilst working on site and helping the project run smoothly from start to finish. Seeing the transformation of an outdated space into a welcoming, high-quality cinema reinforced the importance of maintaining charitable facilities and the positive impact well-executed projects can have on children and their families.

Jack Taylor, Director, TaylorMade Smart Homes Ltd

VENUE COMMENTS:

“A big thank you from everyone here at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The cinema will provide our families and children with a space that they can spend quality time together in. Without the support we receive, we wouldn’t be able to provide the excellent service we do”.

Samuel Clayton, Lottery Development OIfficer, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice

PEOPLE INVOLVED IN MAKING IT HAPPEN:

  • Ian Morrish (Founder, Together for Cinema)
  • Jack Taylor (Director, TaylorMade Smart Homes Ltd)
  • Colin Scott (Director, Nova Star Ceilings)
  • All the manufacturers, distributors and other suppliers that supplied the necessary product, all of whom have already been mentioned in the Kit List above.
  • The Together for Cinema Directors and Partners, without who these installations would not be possible.

THANK YOU…, you have helped make a real difference at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston, and in turn, have made a real difference to so many people’s lives.

FINANCIALS:

We’re all aware that charities have to work very hard to secure the funding for most of their operational costs. With the comprehensive and considered cradling of a family through tough times, there is little monies left over for luxuries such as a cinema room.

For Bluebell Wood this newly refurbished cinema room is a wonderful improvement to their facility and at a normal cost of around £10,000, is something that would not usually be considered as a possibility.

SUMMARY:

This was Together for Cinema’s 58th good cause cinema room installation and helped take the Together for Cinema good cause community delivery to just over £1.5m worth of installations, had they all been paid for.

For us, to revisit a previous installation is always a pleasure. It was great to hear how the room at Bluebell Wood has been used and enjoyed over the last 14 years, and it was so nice to be able to upgrade and give it a new lease of life with a new ‘feature’ ceiling that I know the children will love!

A huge thank you again to Colin Scott for helping out and passing the servicing baton onto Jack Taylor. For Jack to pick this up on the understanding that there was no financial return was very kind and extremely generous, particularly in these challenging times. I hope the ‘feel good’ factor of being involved in such a project, and making a difference to so many lives, is worth more than any payment.
